---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Katelin Albert <katelin.albert@mail.utoronto. Date: Mon, Sep 22, 2014 at 10:42 AM Subject: HPV VACCINE RESEARCH To: "admin@kindercarepediatrics.ca Dear Kindercare Pediatrics, I hope this email finds you well. My name is Katelin Albert, I am a PhD candidate in the department of sociology at the University of Toronto. My dissertation research is on the HPV vaccine, and I have been speaking to parents about the decision making process in order to understand what experiences, beliefs, or opinions are present/absent during the decision to vaccinate their daughters (Vaccine offered free in grade 8 in Ontario). I am looking to speak to a wide variety of parents into order to capture a diversity of voices and experiences. I am looking to speak to consenting and non-consenting mothers.
I am emailing you to see if you would be willing to assist me in reaching out to parents through your blog. Would you be able to either post a flyer about my study, or alternatively, add information on my study as a short blog post? I am looking to speak with parents who have daughters in any Ontario school between grades 6-12. Involvement would include a one-hour interview, at a time and place of convenience for the parent. Interviews are confidential and will be kept anonymous. The interview does not require any specific knowledge about the HPV vaccine. The interview is a discussion with parents about their thoughts, beliefs, and experiences that may be present during the decision to consent or not consent the vaccine. I have included more information on the study below. Interested parents can contact me directly if they have any questions, or want to learn more about the study, at
Katelin.albert@mail.utoronto. Thank you for your time. I look forward to hearing from you. Sincerely, Katelin Albert ------------------------------ Katelin Albert Doctoral Candidate

Information on HPV Vaccine ------------------------------ The purpose of the interview is to help me understand what motivates parents to accept or reject the HPV vaccination for their daughters. More specifically, what experiences, beliefs, and opinions, if any, helped guide parents in making their decision.
My key objectives are:
· How do parents reason or justify their decision to accept or reject the HPV vaccine for their grade 8 daughters? · To identify the motivations to accept or reject the vaccine from the perspective of the, specifically looking at how parents explain their decision, · To discover what factors, such as media and religion initiate a parent’s decision, · To identify general parenting practices to understand how the HPV vaccination fits into their child’s life, and their child’s future health and wellbeing.
This project is part of doctoral dissertation that is a requirement for the PhD program and will also be a part of my overall dissertation project. It has received ethics approval from the University of Toronto.
Participation in this study is voluntary. You are free to decline an interview. If you choose to be interviewed, you may end the interview at any time or decline to answer any questions you so choose with out explanation and with no consequences. If you are interested in participating, I would be happy to arrange an interview at a location that is convenient for you.
Although the findings of this study may not directly benefit you, by participating in this study you will be making a valuable contribution to the development of a new understanding about parents come to accept or reject the HPV vaccination for their daughters.
Thank you for taking the time to consider this request. If you have any questions about this project you are welcome to contact me directly.

Hi. Thanks for thinking of us. I would be happy to publish a blog post to help you recruit subjects. I just need to be reassured that as part of the process, you will in no way advocate, whether directly or indirectly, for any anti-vaccine ideas/principles. Hello Dr. Flanders,
Thank you for your prompt response and your help in recruiting potential informants.
I have attached a word document to this email, the contents of which would be the blog post.
My research is seeking to speak with both consenting and non-consenting parents, although in no way am I advocating or suggesting that parents do not consent this or other vaccines in this blog entry. I am unsure if people will comment on the blog itself,
and I will not be moderating the discussion there, so that aspect of the blog post will be out of my control in terms of the content of discussion.
I have also attached a recruitment photo that should accompany the blog entry as well.
I very much appreciate your help and support.
Please let me know if you need any of these materials in a different format.
Once it is up, do let me know and I will share the link. ![]() Sincerely,
Katelin Albert
